A rare pair of Gustavian wall sconces, attributed to Fredric Ludvig Rung, Stockholm circa 1775-1780.

Each sconce for three candles, in original gilt bronze with matte and polished finishes.

The pair is crowned with classical rosettes adorned with tassels. The candle arms are designed as gracefully curved, leaf-decorated branches that end in lily-shaped drip pans and urn-shaped candle holders. The lower section is finished with bands and tassels decorated with sequins.

Wall sconces that can be attributed to Rung are rare. Similar models have appeared on a few previous occasions, with minor variations. A pair sold at auction in 2016 bore Rung’s signature, which, together with pieces in the Royal collections attributed to Rung’s workshop, leaves no doubt about the maker’s identity.
