A Pair of Oil Lamps, L’Étude and La Philosophie. Attributed to François Rémond circa 1785

In ormolu and patinated bronze after a design by Louis-Simon Boizot

A finely cast pair of decorative oil lamps in the form of young allegorical figures representing Study (L’Étude) and Philosophy (La Philosophie). Each figure is seated upon an Egyptian-inspired lamp with gadrooned body, raised on a spreading socle and square base.

For comparison, one may mention the oil lamps held in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles California.
