Important pair of column cabinets, Stockholm 1805-1810

A pair of exceptionally high-quality and unusual column cabinets, crafted in oak with mahogany veneer and adorned with carved and gilded wooden decoration.

One of the cabinets is fitted with shelves, the other with a refined secrétaire arrangement, a so-called guillotine opening, whereby the front may be raised to reveal a fold-out writing surface covered in brown leather, together with eleven drawers and compartments.
The cabinets rest upon four powerful paw feet and are encircled at the base by a leaf-moulding that forms a classically inspired frame. The cornice is shaped in an antique altar form, while the centres of the doors are embellished with the Medusa Rondanini flanked by torches.

For comparison, one may mention the column cabinet included in the Royal Collections and placed in the Cabinet Room at Rosendal Palace, Djurgården, Stockholm.
